National Disability Independence Day: Celebrating Independence, Inclusion, and Equal Opportunity

National Disability Independence Day
National Disability Independence Day

Every year on July 26, we observe National Disability Independence Day, commemorating the historic signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. This landmark legislation transformed the lives of millions by advancing equal rights, accessibility, and opportunities for people with disabilities. Although the ADA is a United States law, its vision of inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunity continues to inspire communities around the world.

At Bridge to Care, National Disability Independence Day is more than a date on the calendar—it reflects the values that shape everything we do. We believe that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, make meaningful choices, pursue personal goals, and participate fully in community life.

Independence Begins with Opportunity

True independence is not about facing life's challenges alone. Rather, it is about having access to the right supports, inclusive environments, and meaningful opportunities that enable individuals to thrive.

For many people living with disabilities, independence means having the confidence to make decisions, access education, secure meaningful employment, build relationships, participate in community life, and pursue personal aspirations. When communities remove barriers and embrace inclusion, individuals are empowered to live fuller, richer, and more self-directed lives.

"Independence does not mean facing life's challenges alone—it means having access to the right supports, inclusive environments, and equal opportunities to thrive."

Empowering Albertans Through Person-Centred Care

Across Alberta, Bridge to Care proudly supports children, youth, adults, seniors, and individuals with diverse abilities through compassionate, person-centred services that promote independence, inclusion, and lifelong success.

Our comprehensive services include:

  • Respite Care: Flexible in-home, out-of-home, weekend, and 24-hour respite services that strengthen families and support caregivers.

  • Residential Programs: Safe, nurturing homes where individuals receive personalized support while developing greater independence.

  • Community Inclusion Services: Encouraging meaningful participation in recreational, educational, volunteer, and social opportunities throughout the community.

  • Therapeutic Services: Occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, behavioural supports, counselling, and other specialized services that help individuals reach their fullest potential.

  • Senior Care Services: Compassionate support that enables seniors to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life in their own homes.

  • Inclusive Post-Secondary Education (IPSE): Opening doors to higher education by supporting students with developmental disabilities to participate fully in campus life, academic learning, career development, and meaningful employment.

Each program we offer is intentionally designed to build confidence, develop practical life skills, strengthen natural supports, and empower individuals to achieve their personal goals.

Belonging Is the Foundation of Independence

Accessibility alone is not enough.

True inclusion is experienced when individuals feel welcomed, respected, valued, and connected within their communities. Belonging means having opportunities to contribute, to learn, to work, to build friendships, and to be recognized for one's unique talents and strengths.

Through individualized planning, life-skills development, employment preparation, therapeutic supports, and collaborative partnerships with families, educational institutions, employers, and community organizations, Bridge to Care helps individuals build the confidence and skills needed to lead meaningful, self-directed lives.

Our goal is not simply to provide support—but to empower people to discover their potential, achieve greater independence, and participate fully in every aspect of community life.

Creating Inclusive Communities Together

Building an inclusive society is a shared responsibility.

Families, educators, employers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, community organizations, and neighbours all have a role to play in removing barriers and creating environments where every individual is welcomed and valued.

Whether through accessible education, inclusive employment, supportive housing, or community participation, each step we take toward inclusion helps build stronger, healthier, and more compassionate communities for everyone.

At Bridge to Care, we believe that diversity strengthens our communities and that every individual deserves the opportunity to contribute their gifts, talents, and experiences.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As we recognize National Disability Independence Day, we celebrate the resilience, achievements, leadership, and contributions of individuals living with disabilities.

We also reaffirm our commitment to advocating for greater accessibility, expanding opportunities, and delivering high-quality, person-centred supports that empower individuals and families across Alberta.

While July 26 serves as an important reminder of how far society has come, it also inspires us to continue working toward a future where inclusion is not simply an aspiration—but an everyday reality.

Our Commitment

At Bridge to Care, we remain dedicated to empowering lives through compassionate care, innovative programs, meaningful partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to inclusion.

Together, we can build communities where ability is celebrated, barriers are removed, diversity is embraced, and every individual has the opportunity to live with purpose, dignity, independence, and hope.
