Mental health is one of the biggest challenges every country is facing. At least one in four people will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives.
What is mental health?
Mental health is a state of psychological and emotional well being. Just as we prioritize our physical well-being, we should also give importance to our mental health. It’s not just about surviving, it’s about thriving. It involves finding joy in life, feeling a sense of purpose, and effectively navigating life's challenges and triumphs.
What is mental illness?
Mental illness is a recognized disorder with established diagnostic criteria, influenced by factors such as genetics, brain chemistry, or trauma. It can affect individuals irrespective of age, socioeconomic status, gender, or ethnicity. These conditions may also be referred to as mental health disorders. It is characterized by disruptions in cognition, emotions, and perceptions significant enough to impact daily activities. Examples include anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and mood disorders like major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.
Factors affecting mental health
Mental health is positively or negatively influenced by many factors including life experiences like a broken family, financial liability , loss of a beloved. The relationships you maintain with friends, family members, co-workers also have a huge impact on your mental health . Also an ailment in the physical health of a person can also have a negative impact on his mental health. Having good mental health is not just about the absence of mental illness, and experiencing a mental illness does not prevent one from having good mental health. Mental illness is just like any other physical ailment. Good mental health allows someone to live a fulfilling, satisfying life while dealing with everyday challenges.
In Canada, one out of every four individuals will encounter a mental health challenge within a year. However, all of us without exception cope with mental health. Even if you don't have a diagnosed mental illness, it does not guarantee constant well-being. Stress, challenges in life, or burnout can affect anyone. Therefore, it's not good to divide people into those with mental illnesses and those without.
How is physical health affecting mental health?
People with physical illness are more prone to experience mental disorders. For instance,
people suffering with psoriasis experience psychological and emotional distress that negatively impacts their overall health and quality of life. Similarly, people diagnosed with heart disease or cancer may experience sleepless nights, loss of interest in activities, low mood and ultimately lead to depression and anxiety. Poor mental health can contribute to chronic physical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Stress and anxiety can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses.
What happens if mental health is not taken care of?
Neuropsychiatric disorders account for over 40% of chronic disease and are the greatest cause of years lived with disability. Depression is the single most prominent cause. One of the most tragic results of mental health problems is suicide.Suicide is a leading and hidden cause of death among young adults, second only to traffic accidents among those aged 15–35 years.
Ways to improve our mental health:
Several factors contribute to maintaining good mental health, including having a sense of
purpose, fostering strong relationships, feeling connected to others, possessing a healthy sense of
self, effectively managing stress, and finding enjoyment in life.
Regular Exercise: Physical activity increases the release of the hormone endorphins, which boosts our mood and reduces stress.
Balanced nutrition: Helps in maintaining a healthy weight and improves brain function.
Regular sleep pattern : Helps to reduce stress and regulate our emotions.
Stay connected with the people: Surround yourself with positive people and make an effort to stay connected.
Self care: Make time for yourself and engage in activities you enjoy.
